I started my career in the automotive industry. I worked in drafting for my dad who owned an engineering company. They were GM suppliers. I was fortunate to have this chance because it presented so many opportunities to me in the 20 years I worked there. At the beginning I was doing basic drafting and ended up doing very technical auto body design and illustrations using CAD and Unigraphics software.
Thanks to that experience I was able to pivot my career and I went to work for a defense contractor as an illustrator. I worked on the illustrations that the soldiers were using in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was able to hone my skills in the Adobe suite – especially with Illustrator and Photoshop software. This was an exciting and somewhat nerve-wracking experience. Nerve wrecking due to the nature of the work we were doing but exciting because due to my previous experience I was put in charge of the entire group of illustrators in my division. Without realizing it this experience shaped me and prepared me to become an entrepreneur.
Once this work ended, I realized that I no longer wanted to work for others and had to rely on them for a job. I pivoted once again but this time in a completely different direction.
A unique learning opportunity was presented to me to be an assistant to a woman that had a language service business. I jumped right in with both feet and embraced this and decided that this was meant for me and was going to be my future and allow me to be my own boss. I worked with her and learned her business and after 1 ½ years I bought it from her and ran with it. 7 years later I am running a very successful and thriving language service business and loving it.
