President's Message - March 2021

March 4, 2021

Greetings,

March is Women's History month and one of my favorite times of the year. It represents empowerment, advocacy, and a reminder that we are stronger together! Both our national organization and some of our corporate sponsors have virtual events planned in celebration of women's history and in particular women business owners. Please see the list further in this letter.

The call for NAWBO GDC Board Nominations will be opening later this month.  One of the best decisions I ever made was joining the NAWBO Greater Detroit Chapter Board for the connections and learning from other women business owners to grow my business. We are always looking for more empowering women to become engaged and involved whether serving on a committee or serving on the board. Look for the application to be sent out soon and if you have questions about serving, contact me at [email protected]

NAWBO’s annual Spring Membership Drive kicks off this month through April 30th. Now is a great time to join with new members receiving $45 off the one-time new member initiation fee. Also, everyone who joins during the Membership Drive will be entered into a raffle to win a complimentary virtual registration (valued at $195) for WBC2021. Let’s grow our NAWBO Sisterhood and invite other business women owners to join. For more information visit our national site at nawbo.org

Application process has opened to apply for a Comcast RISE grant. This $5 million grant program will provide 100 individual $10,000 grants to eligible Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)-owned, small businesses located in these geographic areas: Atlanta, GA (Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett Counties); Chicago, IL (Cook County including the City of Chicago); Detroit, MI (also including Hamtramck and Highland Park, MI); Houston, TX (Harris and Fort Bend Counties); and Philadelphia, PA (City of Philadelphia and City of Chester). Additionally, Comcast RISE also offers the opportunity for businesses across the country to apply for marketing and technology services from Comcast Business and Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable. Deadline to apply is March 14, 2021. For full details, eligibility requirements, and to apply visit ComcastRISE.com

Our national organization who is keeping us up-to-date on latest advocaty issues, asked us to share that If you are a sole proprietor, DO NOT apply for PPP until the new loan calculation comes out from the Biden Administration, expected to come out by the end of this week or early next week. If you are a sole proprietor still in the application process, cancel your current loan in process and wait for calculation to be released. Also, the SBA has run some calculations and 99.7% of PPP loans have been forgiven, so for those of you hesitating, they wanted to get that information out there.
