President's Message - March 2019

March 20, 2019

Greetings!

Priscilla Archangel

Happy Spring! We’ve been waiting for this day for months after too many days of freezing cold!

Next week we will honor the accomplishments of influential women business owners and leaders at the Somerset Inn in Troy.  Please join us as we Connect, Learn and Grow on Thursday, March 28th at our 25th Annual Top 10 Michigan Business Women Awards Dinner. Our largest event of the year, keynote speaker Barbara McQuade, former U.S. Attorney General for the Eastern District of Michigan, current faculty member at The University of Michigan Law School and legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, will inspire us. She will also receive this year's GREATER GOOD AWARD.  In addition, we will honor 11 women in 10 different categories, please click here for complete list.  Celebrating our 25th year of honoring inspirational women leaders, we will have some extra fun at this event with a photo booth and silent auction. A portion of the proceeds supports our 501(c)3 organization NAWBO/EXCEL, which provides education, training and mentoring to prepare young girls to become entrepreneurs. To register to attend click here

Later this month we will be issuing a call for nominations to serve on the board of NAWBO Greater Detroit Chapter. This is a great way to serve your fellow women business owners by meeting the needs of our members and also offers you an opportunity to gain leadership skills and increase your business support network. To serve on the board you must be a voting member in good standing at the Premier member level and also have previous NAWBO or NAWBO/EXCEL committee experience.

NAWBO's Spring Membership Drive is in full swing. From March through April 30th there are two ways new members can save along with an incentive for current members who refer new members.

First, any new member who joins at any level receives a $25 discount off the NEW member initiation fee. Plus, she will be entered to win a complimentary registration ($400 value*) for the 2019 National NAWBO Women's Business Conference (WBC), October 13-15 in Jacksonville, FL.

Second, current members who refer three or more new members who join at the Premier annual membership level will receive a complimentary registration to WBC 2019! Plus, the members you refer who join at this level will have their $100 new member initiation fee waived. When signing up, new members must provide the promo code LUV and put down the referring member's name. Click HERE to download the details of the referral program and let’s grow our NAWBO community together. You can also log in to your account at any time either on the national site or Detroit chapter site and all details on the program are listed there.

We are grateful for Comerica who is a Corporate sponsor again this year! One of the special partnerships we have with Comerica is their Power Perks program. NAWBO members who already have or open a new Comerica business account can receive the following benefits:

  • Comerica reimburses $100 of your membership fee. (reimbursement happens in June or December - depending on the timing of your request).
  • Free annual Crain's Detroit Business subscription, upon request
  • Check printing allowance - new Comerica small business accounts will receive a $75 credit toward printing of the first check order.

The 2019 NAWBO Survey has been emailed to all members. Please complete it by April 17 since this will provide our National NAWBO organization with sound data to ensure programming meets members’ needs and influences public policies that will improve the business environment for women business owners. We want our Detroit chapter to submit the most surveys so that we can win the nationwide large chapter competition! If we do, one of our members will be featured in the National Member Spotlight and our chapter receives a complimentary registration to WBC.  Fill out the survey here.

Nominations are open for the NAWBO National Woman Business Owner of the Year Award sponsored by Bank of America. This award recognizes an entrepreneur who excels at strategy, operations, finances, problem solving, overcomes adversity and gives back to her community. To be eligible for this award, the nominee must be a NAWBO Premier member who is not currently a member of the National Board of Directors. The Woman Business Owner of the Year award is open to any woman business owner that owns at least 25% of her business and actively runs the day-to-day operations. The award winner MUST be available to accept the award in person at NAWBO's 2019 Awards Gala which closes the Women's Business Conference in Jacksonville, Florida on October 15, 2019.
