President's Message - July 2020

July 1, 2020

Happy 40th Birthday NAWBO GDC Chapter! In June 1980, this chapter was established five years after the national organization. I am honored to be part of an organization that has encouraged the growth and support of women business owners for so many years and will continue to impact our members in the future.

Last week's virtual President's Reception and Annual Meeting was a wonderful celebration. I am glad so many of you could join us as we celebrated our chapter's accomplishments, said goodbye to our NAWBO Sisters completing their board term and welcoming our new board members. I am truly grateful to Comerica Bank for being our sponsor of this event. And I was delighted that Senator Debbie Stabenow was able to attend and share her support of women business owners.

As we head into our new fiscal year, I am honored to be able to serve you, our members, for another year. Our focus this year is to help our members Retool, Rebuild, and Revive.

We know that COVID-19 has affected so many of our members. Some are barely surviving, others have pivoted and retooled their business to address the change and others are really thriving under these conditions. Our Chapter's charge is to support each of our members at whatever stage her business is at so she can retool, rebuild, and revive.

In addition, we cannot forget the current racial inequality and tension our nation is facing today. Our chapter along with our national organization need to ensure we lead with equity, inclusion, and diversity. As women business owners, it is important for us to evaluate how we are practicing anti-racism in our business and our community. And, we need to explore how can we all can come together as a collective force to advocate for this.

All of this lays the foundation for our board to begin planning for the coming year. At the end of this month we will meet to create a strategy on how we can provide education, businesses opportunities, resources, networking, connections and NAWBO's secret sauce - that sisterhood of support for each of you. We will continue to find ways to help you maximize your NAWBO benefits and engagement with us.  Our goal is to help you Retool, Rebuild and Revive.

Both nationally and locally, NAWBO is taking a break from offering virtual events this month. Many have expressed the need for a "Zoom" break and a chance to recharge and hopefully enjoy some of this summer weather. This will also give the board some time to plan the best way to move forward with programming and other opportunities for our members for the coming year.
