President's Message - April 2020
March 31, 2020 Greetings, I’m sure you’ve heard the words “unprecedented,” “unchartered,” “new terrain,” and “new normal” over the past several weeks more than ever. Conditions continue to change rapidly and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I'm writing first, to simply check in with you personally, and second, to provide an update. I want to remind you that NAWBO-GDC is here for you. We have an amazing bond of sisterhood, support and resources (nationally and locally) to help as you navigate these evolving times. Both the national organization and your local chapter have quite a few programs scheduled this month. Please read below and take advantage of some of these great opportunities offered free to you. As many of you know we postponed our Annual Top 10 event scheduled for March 25, 2020. We hope to announce to you in May the new date. We also hope to start back the First Friday Ladies Over Lunch program very soon! I have some sad news. Jeanne Gerristen who was the 2nd president for our Chapter, serving from 1982 to 1983, passed away earlier in March at the age of 85. Jeanne was a woman business owner, who in the 1990s worked in Kazakhstan with women entrepreneurs through the Peace Corps. While there, she fell ill and returned to the States, continued working as a public relations entrepreneur and eventually retiring and moving to Chicago. She often commented on our Facebook posts encouraging us to continue our work of supporting and lifting up women business owners. We are looking for members who would like to serve on NAWBO-GDC Board. Nominations deadline is today. One of the best decisions I ever made was joining the NAWBO Greater Detroit Chapter Board for the connections and learning from other women business owners to grow my business. If interested fill out this application or if you have questions contact Priscilla Archangel, immediate past president and nominations chair.
Both the national NAWBO and your local chapter has come up with virtual programming for the month of April to help you through these challenging times. Some are the same time every week and others have different dates and times. Every Monday morning we will send you the weekly list of topics. Every Tuesday at noon NAWBO National will present a vitual Lunch and Learn. Today's topic Understanding the CARES ACT. REGISTER NOW Every Friday at 10:30 am NAWBO National will have a Connect and Learn with a featured speaker. This Friday, April 3rd is on the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. Event is free but please REGISTER. If you are interested in being a speaker for a NAWBO Lunch and Learn or Connects and Learn, download and fill out this form and send to email address on the form. NAWBO-GDC has launched a virtual series called Staying Sharp & Profitable through Unexpected Change through the NAWBO-GDC Facebook page.Turn on your Facebook notifications to receive alerts for when we go LIVE on:
NAWBO’s annual Spring Membership Drive extended through May 31st. Now is a great time to join with new members receiving $45 off (in honor of National NAWBO’s 45th anniversary) the one-time new member initiation fee and other incentives to join. Let’s grow our NAWBO Sisterhood and invite other business women owners to join. For more information visit our national site at nawbo.org.
