President's Message - April 2019

April 16, 2019

Priscilla Archangel

Last month we celebrated our 25th Anniversary Top 10 Michigan Women's Business Awards. This was a wonderful evening recognizing the accomplishments of our sisters! Paula Tutman was again our Mistress of Ceremonies, Barbara McQuade, former United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan was our keynote speaker and Greater Good award recipient and we also honored Regina Gaines, ReeJade Richmond, Dr. Geneva Jones Williams, Margery Krevsky Dosey, Kieara Johnson, Laurie Sall, Linzie Venegas, Taryn Sulkes, Linda Torakis, Pam Perry and Sophia Garcia! What a FABULOUS team! Thanks to our sponsors Comerica, General Motors, Comcast Business, Morgan Stanley, Productions Plus, UHY and Farmer's Insurance/Stacey Hill. Also, we truly appreciated the support from State Senator Sylvia Santana and U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow! Please visit our website to see all the great pictures from the event.

So much of being part of NAWBO GDC and being able to Connect, Learn and Grow is about "showing up." At our Top 10 event, General Motors awarded a scholarship to NAWBO member Tonia Williams, CEO, Universal Special Events, to attend Dartmouth Tuck’s Building a High-Performing Minority Business Program. This is a one-week intensive program focused on strategy implementation to drive results, leverage the value chain and improve the bottom line. But the surprise was, GM decided on the spot to award a scholarship to another member who simply “showed up” and said she wished she was able to attend. She was at the right place at the right time, and thus received the opportunity of her dreams. Congratulations!!

Nominations are now open to serve on the board of NAWBO Greater Detroit Chapter. This is a great way to serve your fellow women business owners by meeting the needs of our members and also offers you an opportunity to gain leadership skills and increase your business support network. To serve on the board you must be a voting member in good standing at the Premier member level and also have previous NAWBO or NAWBO/EXCEL committee experience. Fill out this nomination form by April 30, 2019 to be considered.  New directors are sworn in and introduced at our President's Reception which includes our annual meeting on June 5, 2019, 5 pm to 7 pm, at the Skyline Club in Southfield, MI.

First, any new member who joins at any level receives a $25 discount off the NEW member initiation fee. Plus, she will be entered to win a complimentary registration ($400 value*) for the 2019 National NAWBO Women's Business Conference (WBC), October 13-15 in Jacksonville, FL.

Second, current members who refer three or more new members who join at the Premier annual membership level will receive a complimentary registration to WBC 2019! Plus, the members you refer who join at this level will have their $100 new member initiation fee waived. When signing up, new members must provide the promo code LUV and put down the referring member's name. Click HERE to download the details of the referral program and let’s grow our NAWBO community together. You can also log in to your account at any time either on the national site or Detroit chapter site and all details on the program are listed there.

Last chance to fill out the 2019 NAWBO Survey. The deadline to give us your opinion is April 17th. By taking the survey you will be providing our National NAWBO organization with sound data to ensure programming meets members’ needs and influences public policies that will improve the business environment for women business owners. We want our Detroit chapter to submit the most surveys so that we can win the nationwide large chapter competition! If we do, one of our members will be featured in the National Member Spotlight and our chapter receives a complimentary registration to WBC.  Fill out the survey here.
